In the UK it is reported that 2.5 billion coffee cups are thrown away each year. Even if a cup is advertised as recycled, the polyethylene coating inside the cups that sticks to the paper part is recognised as a contaminant the cups are redirected to landfill. Even fully recyclable cups still create a huge amount of unnecessary waste.
We are proud to be part of the Zero Waste Scotland Ditching Disposables initiative whereby we hope to slash the quantity of our single use waste and help change attitudes towards throwaway items.
Like many coffee shops, we offer a discount to our customers who take their takeaway coffee in a reusable cup, but the number of people who do this is small. If you are anything like we are, we love the idea of a reusable cup, we just always leave it at home (alongside our shopping bags) after we take it into the house for a wash and then forget to take it with us.
Working with 14 other small cafe’s and businesses across Stirling, the reusable cup scheme will allow you to pick up a reusable cup for a teeny tiny deposit of £1 and, AND, then enable you to take back to any participating cafe and swap it for a clean one. Or if you are super organised, then you just use your reusable cup like you would normally. When you’ve had enough of your cup, you can return it and get your deposit back. Simples.
